You don’t need to add any additional repository and just update the system using the below commands.

sudo apt install update
sudo apt install upgrade
sudo apt install r-base

Once it's installed, we can check the R version on the ubuntu machine.
[email protected]:~$ R --version
R version 3.6.3 (2020-02-29) -- "Holding the Windsock"
Copyright (C) 2020 The R Foundation for Statistical Computing
Platform: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu (64-bit)

Install Rstudio on Ubuntu:

you can download the rstudio from official websites and it comes with .deb package. If you’re not able to install the .deb package, you can install the DEB file on ubuntu using the below command. 

sudo apt install gdebi-core

Now you should be able to install it using the downloaded package. After downloading the package, run the below command to get installed. 

[email protected]:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i rstudio-1.3.959-amd64.deb

If you face any dependencies issue while installing the studio using the above command, you can fix it using the below commands. 

sudo apt --fix-broken install
sudo apt -f install
sudo apt install libclang-dev

After running the above commands, try to install the package on the machine.

[email protected]:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i rstudio-1.3.959-amd64.deb 
(Reading database ... 240839 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to unpack rstudio-1.3.959-amd64.deb ...

Now Search the installed packages in the search bar with 'R'.
