Step To Install VLC Player In Ubuntu 18.04 and CentOS

If you want to know the step to install VLC Player in your Linux machine there are two ways either by Ubuntu software center or manual installation via command line.  We can install and download a VLC media player for Ubuntu. This is an open-source media player that supports lots of video formats and available for all the operations systems.

Step To Install VLC Player In Ubuntu 18.04

We can also use it as a screen recorder and most widely downloaded software. By default, you won’t see this in the software list of Ubuntu. we have to install it using either command line or deb file. 

It has features like webcam recorded, screenshot, record/ covert audio or video, create a bookmark, the watermark, etc in the video. O

As you can see I do not have VLC installed on the machine.

Run the below command to install the VLC Player 

sudo apt-get install vlc browser-plugin-vlc

ubuntu vlc install

After running the above command it will start installing a VLC player in your machine, Finally has been installed.

vlc download for ubuntu

Install VLC Player on CentOS: 

When you need a VLC media player on CentOS / Redhat machine. you can use this method to install on both the OS. 

  1. you must have installed the Epel-repository and rpmfusion repository on your Linux machine. 
sudo yum install epel-release -y
sudo yum install

2. Once you have installed the repository, run the below command. 

sudo yum install vlc -y

Check the VLC version using the below command.

[root@vlc ~]# rpm -qa vlc

3. Now open the VLC media player from Applications -> sound & Video 

4. If you’re using the Linux machine and installed as the root user, it won’t open. you will get an error like below:

VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry.
If you need to use real-time priorities and/or privileged TCP ports
you can use vlc-wrapper (make sure it is Set-UID root and
cannot be run by non-trusted users first)

To solve the above issue, run the below command as root or sudo user. 

sed -i 's/geteuid/getppid/' /usr/bin/vlc

Once the command is executed, you will be able to open VLC Player. 

Click on Continue and now you play any video on your Linux machine. 

We can update the VLC media player using yum update vlc command.
