How To Upgrade Firefox and Enable Multi-Process On Ubuntu

We can install and update Mozilla firefox in ubuntu. Let’s see, how to upgrade firefox in ubuntu as well as Linux. We can also install ubuntu in Linux. You can update firefox in Linux and also on the ubuntu machine using the below commands.  

Before upgrading the firefox browser on ubuntu, we will check the current version using the command line.

[email protected]:~$ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 69.0.1

Install and Upgrade Firefox:

The Firefox browser is already installed with the Ubuntu machine with a fresh OS. if it’s not present, you can install it using sudo apt install firefox

Now we can simply update the firefox browser using sudo apt install firefox.

This command will update the firefox with the new version on the machine. The recommended method is to update the entire system rather than updating a single package.

We can upgrade the system using sudo apt upgrade and If you need to remove it, you can simply use the sudo apt remove firefox

Now we will install it using the PPA repository and we need to add it to the ubuntu machine using the below commands.

[email protected]:~$ sudo apt-add-repository "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa/ubuntu bionic main"

You have to run the below command to get firefox and it will remove the old one then started installing the new version.

[email protected]:~$ sudo apt install firefox

You can see the new version is 76.0.1 that’s the latest one.

[email protected]:~$ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 76.0.1

If you want to check the version manually by opening the firefox, click on the “help” and open the about firefox.

Enable Multi-Process On Firefox:

Before making any changes, we will check whether it's enabled or not by typing
"about:support" in the Mozilla browser. if you see "Multiprocess Windows= 1",
that's mean enabled.

To Manually enable it, Now type the “about:config” then click on ” I accept the risk“.

Now search for “browser.tabs.remote.autostart” then you will see the output like below.

We have to double click on the "true" then it will be changed to "false".
