We can install KDE plasma 5 Desktop on Debian & Ubuntu. We don’t need to add any extra repository for this. Kubuntu is the KDE version of the Ubuntu by default.
How To Install KDE Plasma 5 On Debian/Ubuntu 20.04:
Before installing the KDE Plasma on Debian, We have to update and upgrade the system packages using the below commands.
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
Install KDE Plasma Desktop:
You can easily install the KDE plasma on the ubuntu machine. Once you have updated all the packages. This will not install any apps that come along with it. you can find this in the default repository, no need to add any third party.
sudo apt install plasma-desktop
If you want Full KDE Desktop Environment with software pre-installed, use the below command.
sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop
Click on “OK“
Click on “OK“.
Select the KDE Default “sddm” Display Manager and hit the enter.
Once you have installed it, now we have to logout and login on ubuntu 20.04 LTS. you need to follow the below instructions.
Before putting the password, click on the Gear button as shown in the figure.
Select “Plasma” and log in with your password.
Now we have successfully installed the KDE Desktop on ubuntu 20.04 as shown in the below figure.
Install using the tasksel:
We can also get this using the tasksel on the ubuntu machine. Simply run the below commands.
sudo apt install tasksel
Once the above task is completed then run these commands to install it.
sudo tasksel install kubuntu-desktop sudo tasksel install kubuntu-full
We need to follow the above installation from Image 3. The process is the same.
UnInstall KDE Plasma Desktop:
If you want to remove it, you can follow the below commands.
sudo apt remove plasma-desktop --remove sudo apt remove kubuntu-desktop --remove
You can reset the login screen using the below commands and update the grub.
sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth select 1 sudo update-initramfs -u sudo update-grub
Now Disable the “sddm” and enable the gdm3” using the following commands.
sudo systemctl stop sddm && sudo systemctl disable sddm sudo systemctl enable gdm3 && sudo systemctl start gdm3 sudo reboot
